7 Unspoken Rules of Tattoo Shop Etiquette

There are some unspoken rules of etiquette when it comes to tattoo shops. Here are 7 tips that will help you be the type of client that your artist wants to get back in their chair!

1. Appointments are Serious!

Appointments are the backbone of the tattooing industry. Respect for an artist’s time is crucial. Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment, and if unforeseen circumstances arise, a heads-up would be greatly appreciated. Most artists understand that life happens, but please do everything you can to communicate quickly, up-front, and directly. Every client that comes to an appointment late or no-shows make the tattoo artist’s livelihood more difficult. Remember, each appointment is a commitment not just on your end but also on the artists.

2. Personal Hygiene Matters

Make sure that you are freshly showered and clean prior to an appointment. Before you step into the studio, take a moment to freshen up. You and your artist are going to be in close proximity with each other. That means that you both are going to be able to smell perfumes, body smells, each other’s breath. Good personal hygiene is not just a courtesy; it’s a necessity. A clean canvas is essential for a clean and healthy tattoo.

3. Bring A Friend

While your friends are more than welcome to share in the excitement, it’s essential to be mindful of the limited space in the tattoo studio. Check in advance with the shop or artist regarding their policy on friends. If they join, make sure they understand the need for a calm and focused atmosphere. Most tattoo artists are more than happy for you to bring a friend along, A friend, just not your entire entourage!

4. Don’t Haggle Over Tattoo Price

Tattoo pricing is a delicate balance that reflects not just the time spent but also the years of skill and experience a tattoo artist brings to the table. If the price of the tattoo is a concern for you, make sure to talk about tattoo pricing with your artist before scheduling an appointment with them, Avoid haggling over prices; instead, focus on the value you place on the unique piece we’re about to create together. It's an investment in a work of art that will last a lifetime and remember, often with tattoos you get what you pay for.
