Eco-Friendly Tattooing: Sustainable Practices in the Tattoo Industry

I am no hippy….

But as a member of the human species, I care about our planet and do what I can to contribute to its health and longevity! Also, no hate towards hippies, I think they’re pretty neat. (Although one of my favorite “curse” words is “Dirty Hippies!!”)

One thing that you may not know about tattooing is that there tends to be a lot of waste. This is because we are working with blood and other bodily fluids and need to use plastics and one-use products to maintain a safe and sterile environment for each client. This can lead to having a lot of waste as a tattoo artist, but rest assured that not all hope is lost! I was shown some sustainable practices in tattooing by the tattoo artist who trained me, but I have also picked up some practices as I have grown and done my own research and deep diving.

Sustainable Tattoo Supplies

One of the ways that I practice sustainability at Storyline is by using eco-friendly products. Here are some of the products that I use as I try to think and be environmentally conscious:

  • Biodegradable Ink Holders

  • Biodegradable Razors

  • Biodegradable Cover Bags

  • Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies

I strive to do as many small everyday things as I can to make a difference in the environment with my business!

Encouraging Multi-use Products

Something else that I am fairly passionate about is multi-use products. The more single-use items we use, the more waste we add to the planet. I have a variety of tattoo products that I sell at my tattoo shop; only one is a single-use product. If you are going to get a tattoo, chances are you will get more, so buying a multi-use tattoo product will save you money in the long-run and will also help the environment as a whole.

Supporting Sustainable Brands

There is no shortage of tattoo products on the market for you to purchase, some are eco-friendly, carbon neutral, and sustainable; others are not. I choose to support and point people towards brands that are helping rather than hurting the enviournment. How you spend your money speaks volumes about what you care about as an individual or a business. You can directly impact the planet and the market by voting with the money in your pocket. One of the best tattoo brands that I point people towards is Mad Rabbit!

Mad Rabbit is sustainable in a variety of ways:

  • Carbon neutral company

  • Fully Recycled Packaging

  • All Natural Ingredients
