Your Tattoo and Summer Season

Other than Autumn, Summer is my favorite season of the year. Sun, beaches, and nights with family around a campfire are my jam! With all the fun that summer brings, some challenges come with having tattoos. In this blog post, I will guide you through the art of caring for your tattoos during the summer months, ensuring they remain vibrant and protected under the sun.

1. Hydration is Key

Just as you hydrate your body to beat the summer heat, your skin and tattoos need hydration, too. Moisturize regularly with a high-quality, fragrance-free lotion. This will keep your skin hydrated and help maintain the brilliance of your tattoo's colors.

2. Sunscreen is Paramount

The summer sun can be harsh on your skin and tattoos alike. Protect your ink from fading by applying a broad-spectrum tattoo-friendly sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Be diligent about reapplying (I know, nobody does), especially if you spend extended periods outdoors. Consider using a sunscreen that is fragrance-free to avoid skin irritation.

3. Choose Shade Over Direct Sun:

While baking in the sun is tempting, your tattoo may not share the sentiment. Opt for shaded areas when possible, especially during peak sunlight hours (11:00 am-2:00 pm). This simple step can go a long way in preserving the vibrancy of your tattoo and preventing unnecessary sun damage.

Extra Tip: Some skin types and shades of tattoo ink can have an odd reaction when exposed to the sun for a long period. If this happens to you, you might notice raised bumps that look like pimples (This happens to a shade of blue in one of my tattoos every summer). Don’t fear, it is an eczema-like reaction and can be easily cured by applying eczema cream to the affected area. Most affected people see their skin clear up in 3-14 days.

4. Keep Cool

Avoid excessive sweating and overheating, as these can lead to skin irritation. If you're engaging in activities that induce sweating, be sure to cool down and gently cleanse your tattoo afterward. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Loose, breathable clothing can also help your skin breathe and prevent irritation.

5. Wash After Water Activities

Water can impact your tattoo, whether it's a dip in the pool, the ocean, or a backyard sprinkler. Any chemicals or salt irritating your skin can bother your tattoo. Rinse off any chlorine or saltwater promptly, and avoid prolonged soaking. Dry your skin, and follow up with a moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Furthermore, if you have a new tattoo (21 days since tattooed), you should steer clear of all water other than your shower. This includes baths, pools, lakes, ponds, and the ocean! If you do not heed this warning a serious infection and ruined tattoo may be in your future.

6. Bug Off, Carefully:

Summer often brings pesky insects like flies and mosquitoes. While protecting your tattoo from bug bites is crucial, be cautious about applying insect repellent directly on your ink. I recommend opting for a repellent that can be applied to clothing or worn around the wrist. You can also use a citronella candle or other insect-deterring device.

7. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:

Your overall well-being contributes to the health of your skin and tattoos. Anything that you put in your body that affects your skin, in turn, affects your tattoos as well. Stay hydrated, eat a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, and exercise regularly. A healthy lifestyle promotes skin resilience and longevity for your ink.

Conclusion:

As you embrace the warmth and sunshine of summer, let your tattoos be a source of pride and joy. With some care and consideration, you can ensure that your fully healed tattoos remain vibrant, telling your unique story for many summers to come. So, lather on that sunscreen, seek shade, and enjoy the season with your ink as a confident and colorful companion!
